 좋은 일은 그냥 일어나는 것이 아니라 많은 노력을 해야 된다는 의미를 갖고 있는 서양 속담인데, 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 영어 속담 중 하나입니다. 아무것도 안 하고 좋은 일이 일어나길 바라는 것은 어리석은 짓이죠.

 

 

 영어 속담은 알아 두면 큰 도움이 됩니다. 속담은 그 나라의 문화를 엿볼 수 있게 하기 때문인데요. 언어를 배울 때 문화를 알게 되면 언어를 배우는 과정에 더욱 흥미를 갖게 됩니다. 또한 언어를 더 깊게 이해할 수 있게 되죠.

1. "You can’t always get what you want."

원하는 것을 항상 손이 넣을 수는 없다.

[의미] 

자신이 원하는 것을 얻지 못해도 불평하거나 낙담하지 말아야 한다.

[예문]

A: I really wanted to see that movie, but I didn’t have enough money last week 
B: It happens. You can’t always get what you want, right?

 

 

2. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder."

없으면 마음을 더 끈끈하게 만든다.

[의미]

누군가 없거나 또는 무엇인가 없을 때 그 대상이 중요하고 필요하다는 것을 깨닫기 때문에 더 소중히 여기게 된다.

[예문]

"The couple reunited after almost a year and understood that the absence had made their hearts grow fonder."

 

 

3. "Don’t count your chickens before they hatch."

알을 깨기도 전에 병아리로 세지 마라.

[의미]

끝나기 전에 미리 자축하지 말고, 결과를 차분히 기다리고 겸손하게 받아들여야 한다. (김칫국부터 마시지 마라.)

A: “This idea is going to make me many millions of dollars!” 
B: “Whoa. Let’s slow down. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”

 

 

4. "Actions speak louder than words."

행동은 말보다 더 소리가 크다.

[의미]

말만 하는 것보다 직접 행동하는 것이 더 중요하다.

[예문]

"The captain, tired of trying to motivate his players, took it upon himself to guide his team to victory. After all, actions spoke louder than words."

 

 

5. "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

100마일의 여행은 첫 발걸음으로 시작된다.

[의미]

무언가를 이루기 위해서는 시작부터 해야 한다.

6. "All good things must come to an end."

좋은 것들도 결국 끝이 난다.

[의미]

모든 것은 끝이 있다. 좋은 시간들도 영원하지 않다.

“I wish this holiday would go on forever. It’s too bad that all good things must come to an end.”

 

 

7. "A picture is worth a thousand words."

사진 한 장이 천 가지 말보다 가치 있다.

[의미]

한번 보는 것이 백번 듣는 거보다 낫다.

“I wasn’t sure that he loved her, but then I saw them hugging at the airport. A picture is worth a thousand words.”

 

8. "A watched pot never boils."

지켜보고 있는 냄비는 끓지 않는다.

[의미]

무언가 하기 위해서 시간이 걸린다면, 계속 확인하고 점검하는 것은 도움이 되지 않는다. 그저 시간을 주고 기다려야 한다.

[예문]

“I know you think he’s going to be a great guitar player one day, but stop criticizing him so much. He just started taking lessons two weeks ago! A watched pot never boils.”

 

 

9. "Beggars can’t be choosers."

얻어먹은 놈이 쓰다 달다 할 수 없다.

[의미]

자신이 안 좋은 상황에 있고, 누군가 당신에게 도움을 준다면, 당신은 도움을 받고 이렇다 저렇다 더 많은 것을 바라면 안 된다.

[예문]

“I was unemployed, and they offered me a job cleaning prison toilets. I didn’t like the job, but I accepted it. Beggars can’t be choosers.”

 

 

10. "Better late than never."

늦은 것은 하지 않는 것보다 낫다.

[의미]

아예 시작도 하지 않는 것보다 늦더라도 하는 것이 낫다.

[예문]

“I know that it took me weeks to send the letter, but better late than never.”

11. "Don’t judge a book by its cover."

겉표지로만 그 책을 평가하지 마라.

[의미]

누군가 또는 무엇인가를 겉모습만 보고 재단하거나 판단하지 말아야 한다.

[예문]

“Racism is still a problem today, and it will continue to be that way until we learn not to judge a book by its cover.”

 

 

12. "PROVERB Birds of a feather flock together."

날개가 같은 새들이 함께 모인다.

[의미]

같은 성향을 가진 비슷한 사람들끼리 모여서 어울린다.(유유상종)

“I think we all started hanging out because we all liked anime. Birds of a feather flock together.”

 

 

13. "The grass is always greener on the other side."

잔디는 저 다른 울타리 너머가 항상 더 푸르다.

[의미]

사람들은 항상 그들이 갖지 않은 것을 바란다. (남의 떡이 더 커 보인다)

[예문]

A: “I’m jealous of all the free time my single friends have.” 

B: “Yeah, but your friends are probably jealous of you too in some ways. The grass is always greener on the other side.” 

 

 

14. "Cleanliness is next to godliness."

청결함은 신항심 다음으로 중요하다.

[의미]

신은 청결하고, 청결한 것은 이로운 것이라 믿고 있기에 청결해야 한다.

[예문]

“Go take a shower before your date. You know what they say; cleanliness is next to godliness.”

 

 

15. "Don’t bite the hand that feeds you."

먹이를 주는 손을 물지 말아라.

[의미]

당신에게 도움을 주는 사람을 화나게 하거나 다치게 하지 말아야 한다. 사람은 은혜를 알아야 한다.

“You had a fight with your boss? Are you stupid? Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”

 

16. "Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket."

모든 계란을 한 바구니에 담지 마라

[의미]

자신의 모든 희망과 재원을 하나의 망상에 빠지면 안 된다.

[예문]

“I know you really want to be an actor, but don’t you think you’re being financially irresponsible? Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.”

 

 

17. "Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today."

오늘 할 수 있는 것을 내일까지 미루지 마라. 

[의미]

오늘 무언가 할 수 있다면, 바로 해야 한다. 내일까지 기다릴 필요가 없으며, 미루지 말아야 한다.

[예문]

“You have 6 hours of free time now. You should start on that final psychology assignment. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.”

 

 

18. "The squeaky wheel gets the grease."

삐걱거리는 바퀴가 기름을 얻는다.

[의미]

최선이 아닌 상황에 대해 이의를 제기하는 사람이 더 나은 상황을 만들고 좋은 것을 얻을 가능성이 높다.

[예문]

A: “I just don’t understand why she’s received so many promotions, and I’m still at the bottom of the company!” 
B: “She complains a lot. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.”

 

 

19. "Easy come, easy go."

쉽게 얻으면 쉽게 잃는다.

[의미]

큰 노력 없이 운이 좋아 돈을 벌거나, 무언가를 쉽게 얻었을 사람은 그에 대한 가치와 자신의 능력을 모르기 때문에 곧 쉽게 잃을 수 있다.

[예문]

“I won $200 at the casino, and then I spent it on a very expensive meal for me and some friends. Easy come, easy go.”

 

 

20. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

아름다움이란 보는 사람의 생각에 달린 것다.

[의미]

사람들마다 아름다움의 기준은 다르다. 한정된 틀로 정의하는 것이 항상 옳은 것은 아니다.

“I think their house is ugly, but they seem to like it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
